Arbennig cabins are located in the beautiful county of Denbighshire, with a history as dramatic as its scenery.

Many battles have been fought on this ancient Welsh land. During the Medieval Era or Middle Ages, which began after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Denbighshire and its surrounding areas were known as ‘The Lands Between’. Nestled between Gwynedd and Powys, while bordering England, the area was under almost constant threat of invasion.

Many castles were built during this period, including Ruthin, Denbigh and Rhuddlan, among the mountains and valleys that provided protection from would-be invaders. Many of these castles were either destroyed or fell into disrepair over the centuries, however some have been restored or rebuilt among the original ruins, including Ruthin Castle. The castle has an illustrious history, used by King Edward I as a reward for loyalty, it was passed from owner to owner until 1646 when it was eventually captured and pulled down. Today it is a luxury hotel, welcoming visitors from far and wide. Each month, the hotel hosts medieval banquets where guests can enjoy traditional medieval fayre served by fully costumed ladies of the court. Entertainment is provided by court stewards, singing and jesting as you feast – it’s well worth a visit!

Many churches were also established in the Middle Ages, and it was common for these to be embellished with magnificent stained-glass windows – medieval treasures still standing to this day. One such window, dating back to 1533, can be found at the Church of St Dyfnog at Llanrhaeadr, less than an hour’s drive from the cabins. Close to the church you will find St Dyfnog’s holy well, a rectangular pool which, during Medieval times, was widely believed to have healing properties and the ability to cure diseases such as smallpox.

Denbighshire, like so much of Wales, evokes a sense of history that is unparalleled. From the Cistercian Abbey ‘Valle Crucis’, once the second richest monastery in Wales, to the walled market town of Denbigh, steeped in myth and legend and an important part of Welsh history. A stay at Arbennig gives you the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the area’s rich history, as well as its natural beauty.
